blepharitis
Blepharitis is an inflammation of the eyelid margin. It may be caused by either an infection or as an inflammatory reaction to various toxins on the eyelid. There are tiny little openings right behind the eyelashes that function to drain oil from within the eyelid (see picture to the left). This oil is important not only to protect the eyelid surface but it also makes up the outside layer of the tear film. When these little holes get blocked by bacteria or get smaller because of inflammation the eyelid gets swollen and red. If bacteria are the cause, the eyelashes will often get a yellow build-up on them (below picture). If seborrhea (excessively oily skin) is the cause, the eyelids often get a "dandruff-like" appearance. The treatment for these conditions involves good lid hygiene, warm compresses and possibly medicated lid scrubs. Blepharitis is a chronic condition and usually requires long term care. Artificial tears, which you can buy over the counter at any drug store, will often help to relieve any eye irritation associated with the blepharitis. The treatment for each is slightly different so be sure to see you doctor.
